Misumi and Katô — Cultural Centre of JapAn in Paris
Focused on Kenji Misumi and Tai Katô, two essential filmmakers of the 1960s and masters of the golden age of Japanese cult films, this program offers a selection of works of the two artists which allows to observe how they were able to reconcile their personal views with the requirements of the two big studios Daiei and Tôei. If Misumi has to his credit two cult series of world cinema (“Zatôichi” and “Baby Cart”), Katô was able to explore various genres, from thriller to historical parody, including musical films. Both directors have even signed a version of “Yotsuya kaidan”, the famous kabuki play.

Consacré à Kenji Misumi et Tai Katô, deux cinéastes incontournables des années 1960 et maîtres de l’âge d’or du cinéma de genre japonais, ce programme propose une sélection de films permettant d’observer à quel point ils ont pu concilier leurs visions personnelles avec les impératifs émanant de studios Daiei et Tôei. Si Misumi a à son actif deux séries cultes du cinéma mondial (« Zatôichi » et « Baby Cart »), Katô a pu explorer divers genres, du polar à la parodie historique en passant par la comédie musicale. Les deux réalisateurs ont même signé chacun une version du « Fantôme de Yotsuya », fameuse pièce de théâtre kabuki.
